STC Craft at NY Sheep and Wool Festival

Beautiful Yarn Rainbow from Harrisville Designs. Photo courtesy of Laura Poulette.

Last Saturday, the STC Craft team spent a beautiful fall wekend in Rhinebeck at the 33rd annual New York State Sheep & Wool Festival (10/19 – 10/20). We were in good company among 40k+ attendees ranging from knitters, crocheters, and handspinners to lots of fiber-producing livestock!

We proudly hung our STC Craft banner above a wide selection of our craft and design titles on sale via the Hudson Valley-based Merritt Bookstore. The stars of the day were our fabulous authors, doing demos and signings from the morning opening to the afternoon close.

Highlights included:

  • Steady crowds flocking to see The Yarn Whisperer, Clara Parkes, requesting autographs and providing some yarn tales of their own.
  • A Knitted Slipper tree for displaying sample projects, made by hand just for the event by the twin sister of The Knitted Slipper Book author, Katie Startzman.

The Knitted Slipper Tree.

  • Multiple festival attendees greeting Amy Herzog and gushing about how her book has changed their whole knitting experience—we even sold out of Knit to Flatter!
  • Fans of Gretchen Hirsch (in the Shirtwaist Dress from her book!) coming to get their new copies of Gertie's New Book for Better Sewing signed (and to hear about Gretchen's second book, coming soon).

Project samples from STC Craft titles on display.

With other autumnal-themed treats like fresh cider and homemade jams, live llamas and alpacas, and tons of vendors of yarn and knitting gear, the festival is a great destination for everyone, young and old, who wants to spend a happy day in the country. Plus, the fall foliage makes the trip even more worthwhile! A big thank you to our STC Craft fans old and new who stopped by the booth to meet our authors and check out our books—hopefully everyone got some great ideas for new projects!

The Yarn Whisperer Is Coming to a Town Near You!

Hear what the critics are saying

Tiny World Terrariums: A Twig Terrariums Party Report from Assistant Editor Wesley Royce

Last Friday night Twig Terrariums had a launch party for their book Tiny World Terrariums: A Step-by-Step Guide to Easily Contained Life. Katy and Michelle are two of the sweetest, and most enthusiastic, people I’ve had the good fortune of working with while here at ABRAMS, and their launch party was so much fun, filled with great food and drinks. When I received the proposal for Tiny World Terrariums last spring I was so excited. We had been on the lookout for a terrarium book for a while; a tip from our sales department let us know that some accounts had been requesting one, and I immediately knew that this was the book we had been looking for. The terrariums at Twig are fun and unique, filled with scenes that open up the tiny worlds and pull people in to take a closer look. In the book, Katy and Michelle take readers through each step of creating a happy, healthy terrarium so even those with a black thumb can keep theirs alive. If you’re feeling especially motivated you might even want to take one of Twig's NYC workshops. Terrariums make great gifts, and honestly thrive on neglect; I’ve had one living in my windowless office for a year and it is still doing fine.

Weekend Handmade: The Blog Tour

Not only is she stopping at some of her (and our) favorite blogs, but she's also taking the tour to the next level with a special Weekend Handmade theme. Kelly says it best:

"For the tour, I decided to mix it up a little and break a creative, relaxing weekend down into its chronological parts, and find a guest “host” for each segment. If you are confused, it’s okay. It will all be revealed over the next week, as will the details of what makes for a perfect weekend."

Intrigued? So are we. Here's where you'll find Kelly in the days to come:

Tuesday, October 4: Say Yes to Hoboken
Wednesday, October 5: Diggin Food
Thursday, October 6: Not Martha
Friday, October 7: Mighty Girl
Monday, October 10: SF Girl By Bay

Meet STC Cooks

Did you know that STC Craft has a new "sister" blog called STC Cooks? It's a great site where you can read about all of the cookbooks that STC publishes and lots of other foodie culture, plus get free recipes.

One of my favorite STC cookbooks, published this fall, is Baked Explorations: Classic American Dessserts Reinvented by Matt Lewis and Renato Poliatito. This weekend I tried out their recipe for Soft Candy Caramels. These pretty nuggets taste like a high-quality version of the little square supermarket caramels I remember loving as a child. Mine turned out a little harder than they were supposed to because I let the caramel mixture get a tad too hot, so I couldn't cut them into neat squares (as you can see in my photo above), but they're still delicious. I hope you'll check out STC Cooks. And if you're in New York this week, be sure to attend the Baked Brownie Bake-Off at the Brooklyn Kitchen. It's a fundraiser for the Greenpoint Reformed Church Soup Kitchen and the judges are none other than Baked Explorations authors' Lewis and Poliafito.

KNITS MEN WANT Blog Tour!

Knits Men Want author Bruce Weinstein has been teaching knitting for over 10 years, and in that time, he's seen his fair share of well-intentioned gifts knitted for men--full of bright colors, crazy cables, itchy yarn, and...what?! Did you really intarsia yourself on his sweater?

Sometimes the response our gift gets depends on the man. But, according to Bruce, and considering the tales of Cringe or Crush? he's heard from his students and fans, there are tried-and-true rules we should be aware of before we stay up until 3am on Chirstmas Eve crafting our labor of love.

Rules, shmules, I say! Only, why am I now the proud owner of the giant, shawl-wide, extra-bulky scarf I knitted for my main squeeze? I mean, didn't he see that H&M ad with the guy in that enormous cowl-necked sweater? Doesn't he know that sporting the illusion of a shrunken head is très chic? And why did he wear my second, slimmer attempt all winter long?

Bruce will answer my burning questions, and yours, during the course of his blog tour this month. Follow the schedule below, and be sure to check out and contribute to our hilarious Cringe or Crush? Sweepstakes!  Grand prize is a signed copy of Knits Men Want and this 8'' x 10'' print from the book, by photographer Jared Flood of Brooklyn Tweed!
